Fruit Juice & High Blood Pressure

Posted by on

Fruit juices are widely considered to be healthy drinks, and some of them certainly are. But keep the following points in mind, when you’re buying prepackaged fruit juice products at your local grocery store:

  • Look for container labels claiming ‘100% juice’ — that’s a start.
  • Furthermore, avoid products with labels showing any ‘high-fructose corn syrup‘ or ‘sugar’ as ingredients.
  • Even ‘100% juice’ products still naturally contain sugars, usually fructose. Try to estimate how much, if possible.
  • Grapefruit juice, albeit generally a very healthy drink, interacts with certain drugs that you may be taking. Check.
  • Vegetables are also good sources of juices — tomato, carrot, beet, and even celery and cabbage.

Make Your Own Fruit Juice

If you’re in a position to squeeze your own juice from fresh fruits, that’s a good idea. Again, you don’t eliminate all sugars in your drinks by doing that, and you should try to keep track of how much fructose sugar you’re taking in. And, unlike the prepackaged juice products that you buy at the grocery store, your home-squeezed stuff probably won’t get pasteurized before you drink it — so take care to keep your squeezing implements well cleaned up. Store-bought juices may also have gone through being strained; you may not care about that one way or the other.

Fruit Juice Health Benefits

Some juices may have particular health benefits: Cherry juice contains flavonoids that can help to reduce inflammations, and melatonin that can help you to go to sleep. Cranberry juice contains compounds that can help your body to resist urinary-tract infections. Grapefruit juice can increase your body’s absorption of the important coenzyme Q10, that aids in your body’s metabolization of fat. Celery juice can lower your blood pressure — but it may be hard to find readymade, and you may have to squeeze your own. Cabbage juice contains the amino acid glutamine, that can act to heal stomach ulcers — again, however, you may have to squeeze your own.

Grapefruit Juice and Drugs

Do not drink grapefruit juice if you are taking certain drugs: statins, calcium-channel blockers, psychiatric drugs such as Valium and Zoloft, immunosuppressants, Viagra, and several others. For more information, see this link.
